Security in Cardiff: How to Protect Your Home During Lockdown

It is no secret that we find ourselves in strange, unnerving times, with the spread of Covid-19 bringing with it a whole set of social and economic impacts. Now, with Boris Johnson’s recent instruction for Brits to follow strict social distancing guidelines, many of us will be spending more time at home.

Here at Twenty4, we are advising our customers, as well as our Blog readers, to spend this time wisely, exploring measures to take to ensure properties are as safe and secure as they can possibly be.

While lockdown has been actioned with our safety in mind, many opportunists are using this time to conduct illegal activities, namely home and office break-ins. Below, we share a few tips to best protect your home, family, pets and belongings.

Check existing security equipment

Whether you have CCTV, Intruder Alarms or any other type of security device at your home, ensuring it is fully functional, updated and in working order is a must. Proving to be hugely effective deterrents while helping catch intruders in the act, can you really afford not to audit your security equipment?

Keep windows, doors and gates locked

80% of burglars gain entry to a property through an open gate, door or window. This is why regularly checking all are closed and locked is highly recommended. This includes external doors, windows, patio doors, shed doors, garages and so on. Introducing additional padlocks is also an idea you may want to explore.

Check your keys

It is not uncommon for people to leave a spare key with neighbours, friends and family members. While you may trust them, it is fair to say that you are not aware of everyone that enters their home that could potentially get their hands on your keys. This is why ensuring you know who has each of your keys should be a priority.

While on the subject of keys, it is incredibly important that you keep your car keys in a secure place too; preferably the room that you sleep in or in a safe/locked box.

Keep expensive belongings out of sight

As well as keys, it is also a good idea to keep any expensive items or items of sentimental value in a safe place, away from the windows and completely out of sight from the front and back gardens. This will limit your home being targeted for a specific item a burglar has seen.
