How do fire alarms work?

Fire alarms sound automatically by smoke detectors/heat detectors. These sensors are created to detect levels of heat or smoke that could be an indication of a fire.

How often should fire alarms be tested?

The more you test your fire alarms, the better. This is because a simple test will reveal any faults quickly. But, what does the law say about alarm testing? The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 states that fire alarm systems must be tested by a competent person weekly.

Is it hard to test fire alarms?

BS 5839-6: 2019 section 25.1 says that testing a fire alarm does not need any specialist knowledge, and can normally be carried out quite easily.

How often should you check your fire alarms?

There are two fire alarm ‘checks’ that businesses need to conduct. As mentioned, weekly alarm tests are a legal obligation. It is also advised that all businesses have their alarms checked/commissioned by a qualified engineer at least every 6 months. This ‘maintenance’ check will review all components of the alarms as well as any software updates and cleaning necessary.

How many fire alarms do I need?

The number of fire alarms you need will be dependent on many factors. These include the size of the premises, how many people occupy the building, the types of fire safety hazards, escape routes and more!

How should fire alarm testing be recorded?

It is advised that all fire safety-related tests and issues are recorded in a business’ fire safety logbook.
